Read the praised doctor’s record

Check the person first.

A name on a care page is a starting point. The next stop is the public licence record.

How to check a doctor’s licence

  1. Get the full name

Request the doctor’s name in full, along with the type of licence they hold. Keep the spelling as given.

  2. Find the relevant board

For a doctor, use the state medical-board directory below. Select the state in which you will attend the visit.

  3. Read the board’s own record

Match the person’s name and licence details. Read the current status and any public discipline or limits shown.

  4. Keep what you found

Save the record and the date you read it. Ask the service to explain a mismatch before moving on.

What that record can tell you

State boards · public records

Status and public discipline

Doctor licence status and public disciplinary history are published by state medical boards, with the available detail depending on the state.

A record free of public discipline does not rate the doctor’s care.

Blank paper cards sit beneath a blue paper frame with a clear window.
Match the name to the record, then read the limits.

Location matters for an online visit

Under the US guidance checked in September 2026, the doctor must hold a licence or suitable permission for the state in which you attend the online visit.

Give the service your physical location for the visit. Ask which licence or permission applies there. The service’s mailing location does not answer that question.

Check the pharmacy apart from the doctor

A state board of pharmacy handles pharmacy licences; it is a separate body from the medical board.

Ask for the dispensing pharmacy’s name. Then use the FDA, the US medicine regulator, to reach the relevant state pharmacy lookup.
